9 Steps to Designing Strategy: Free Project Canvas

Strategy projects will undoubtedly be the toughest project of your career.

There is so much involved, and many ways for it to go wrong. I created this canvas to help guide students in my strategy course. In this canvas, I’ve distilled the essential steps you need to take to create any organizational strategy, such as a UX, product, or business strategy.

This canvas is based on the idea that insights make strategies successful, and you can only get good strategic insights if you do your research. It’s also based on the idea that you should be collaborative during the strategy process, and this canvas makes the perfect artifact to have strategy conversations with stakeholders throughout a strategy project.

I’ve aligned the language in the canvas with Richard Rumelt’s book, Good Strategy, Bad Strategy, because it’s one of the most straightforward and popular frameworks for understanding strategy. It’s also specifically structured to make sense to designers that can research.
